Mannitol is a polyol manufactured by a process based upon starch. It is remarkably stable and also soluble in different solvents. It occurs as a slightly sweet white crystalline powder, that gives a cooling sensation in the mouth. It is non-cariogenic, has low hygroscopicity and thus forms an ideal excipient for dry formulations.
